Lightly Salted Albacore Tuna – Oregon’s Choice Seafood – Corvallis, OR
Before you stop reading because you saw the word ‘tuna’, just know that not all canned fish is created equal. Herb Goblirsch, the founder of Oregon’s Choice Seafood, and his daughter and now boss of the company, SueAnna Harrison, are passionate about sustainable fishing practices that lead to better-tasting fish. They use fishing trollers to catch their tuna (and salmon) off the Oregon Coast, towing 10–20 lines through the water and off of which they attach lures or baited hooks, meaning they’re targeting surface-feeding fish, younger tuna and not bottom-feeding older ones. Each fish is landed on the boat by hand. The fishermen from Oregon’s Choice troll for tuna in the summer months when the water temperature is between just 58 and 64 degrees; on good days, they can catch 300 fish, and on others, none at all. The fact that they never use nets, and specifically target certain water temperatures, means they catch very few fish that aren’t the ones they’re looking for. They’re a proudly sustainable fishery that is completely dolphin-free.
